NEW RESEARCH

Positioning Civil Society Post-Polokwane: Coming to Terms with ANC Political Leadership Changes

The Centre for Policy Studies is currently conducting research into the changing nature of the ANC and how these changes affect civil society. The project started in January 2009 and will be completed early 2010. The research will investigate whether changes in ANC leadership improve the prospects for greater openness, and space for dialogue and engagement between civil society and the ANC, as well as between civil society and the government. Under a Zuma-led ANC will civil society be better able to make inputs into, and have greater impact on, public policy than under the Mbeki-led ANC?For more information you are welcome to contact Fiona White at the Centre.

Assessing the role of Councillors in Service Delivery at Local Government Level in South Africa.
This is a one year project to assess the role of Councillors in service delivery at local government level in South Africa. The context of the project's problem statement is the wide-scale citizen dissatisfaction and protests (often violent) in recent years against local government because of poor levels and quality of service delivery across the country. The project will explore local government's service delivery challenges. The aim will be to contribute to existing knowledge and debates, increase the quality of interaction between local government and civic society and ultimately facilitate an improvement in service delivery. The project will achieve its objectives through undertaking in-depth primary research in selected municipalities in South Africa. A policy dialogue workshop will be convened with key policy stakeholders to discuss the findings from the research. The beneficiaries of the project will be government policy makers at local, provincial government and national government level, policy specialists, practitioners and experts, local community organisations and civic leaders with an interest in strengthening local government in South Africa. The project has been made possible through financial support fro the Open Society Foundation (OSF). For more information you are welcome to contact Gaynor Paradza at the Centre.
